THE VISIT OF SURABAYA INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

A class of ten students with their teacher from Surabaya International School visited East Java Provincial library. The students with different background, Indonesia, Korea and USA whose instructional language is English provide a challenge for the librarian in charge. One of the librarian said, this is a good opportunity for librarians to realize their function as mediator of a democratic institution that provide service to all people with different background including difference in ethnic group, religion, race, nationality, gender, etc. They must prepare their self with adequate competence to be able to provide quality service to their user, including ability in speaking English as one of the International language.

The group was accepted in the children service room by one of the librarian. They did many activities such as rhyming, reading aloud, singing, and playing. They also follow a library tour, start from visiting adult service room, then continuing to reference and deposit room. They are introduced to the collection of the library, tried the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue), and it ended with the task about finding reading materials based on the topic provided by their teacher. The students seem happy and enjoying their visit.
